TAMPON TAX
By Camden Akers
On February 3rd, Michigan made history in America by being the first U.S. state to eliminate the tampon tax. This is a huge step forward for feminists across the country and all of their supporters. Michiganders, on average, pay between 7-10 dollars a month on menstrual products. This adds up to roughly 5,000 dollars within a lifetime. With so much money being spent on these products, repealing the tax drives down costs for millions of Americans. "Everyone should be able to take care of their most basic healthcare needs without an unnecessary added financial burden," said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Whitmer was the driving force behind the bill, and amongst her many other legislative supporters, she has finally achieved this longcoming goal. The tax repeal was achieved by a two-bill bipartisan package including Senate Bill 153 and House Bill 5267, both movements introduced in 2016. A seemingly small change, but a huge victory for women and menstruaters across the state. This success will hopefully inspire other states across the country to make similar changes and create a progressive country that eliminates financial burden for not only women, but all others affected.
